99s Blue Ridge Host Spartanburg Girl Scouts

In cooperation with Spartanburg Downtown Airport (KSPA), Spartanburg Girl Scouts, and 99s Blue Ridge Chapter, we open the eyes of 45+ girls ages 6 to 17 plus 30+ parents to the world of Aviation on October 22, 2022. There were approximately 10 airport staff and 10 99s at this event There were 6 airplanes ready to fly the girls and parents at 8:45 am on a perfect day – no wind and blue skies for a takeoff and once around the pattern then land.

Then each Girl Scout received their boarding passes to attend the various stations:

  • What is a Pilot?
  • What is the Aviation Alphabet?
  • Can you read a Chart?
  • How to maintain a plane?
  • What makes the plane fly?
  • What is Aviation Weather?

This was followed by lunch and Career talks by CAP and 99s. The Girl Scouts saw Ultra-Light flying, a helicopter, and more airplanes. They created their own paper airplanes for races. We ended the perfect day by learning about how to set up a balloon, taking a tethered balloon ride plus packing up the envelope into a medium size duffle bag. The day ended at 6 pm.

We had approximately a dozen girls who are very interested in being a pilot or working in aviation careers. We were successful in signing up one new 99, Hannah, who is a student pilot and AP student, and several interested females.
