Alyce Newberry Guthrie
Tennessee Chapter

Alyce Mary Guthrie, known to her loved ones as Alyce, Mama, Grandy, and A.M., passed away on June 8, 2023, at the age of 79 in Memphis, Tennessee. Alyce was born on July 29, 1943, in Memphis to James Madden “Boats” Newberry and Alyce Mary Newberry. She graduated from White Station High School and the University of Memphis.
Alyce owned and operated Guthrie Rexall Drugs in Whitehaven and Nite Lites aerial advertising with her husband. She later became the Executive Vice President and Treasurer of PT Boats Inc. for nearly 40 years. PT Boats, Inc., is a historical nonprofit organization established by veterans of WW II PT service to preserve the history of Patrol Torpedo Boats.
She was a long-time member of The Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots and Historical Naval Ships Association.
In her free time, Alyce had a great love for dogs, especially her rescued beagle, Elco. She enjoyed camping and traveling with her family throughout the country, including many holidays spent on the Gulf Coast. Alyce loved motorhoming with her husband, Tom, in the western mountains and visiting museums with her daughter and granddaughter.
Rest in Peace, Alyce. You will be deeply missed by all who knew you.
“Her absence is like the sky, spread over everything.” C.S.Lewis
